Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a CIC and a CBC license in Virginia?

A Commercial Improvement Contractor (CIC) is licensed to make improvements and repairs to existing commercial buildings. A Commercial Building Contractor (CBC) can build new commercial structures from the ground up. CIC contractors must pass both the CIC trade exam and the Business Law exam through Virginia DPOR (Class C exempt).

What type of structures can a CIC contractor work on?

CIC contractors are licensed to perform improvement and repair work on existing commercial structures — offices, retail spaces, warehouses, and similar properties. Not residential buildings or new construction.

Is the Virginia CIC exam open book?

Yes. You can bring approved reference materials into the testing center. But with 50 questions in 120 minutes, knowing how to find answers fast matters just as much as knowing the material. Our pre-tabbed books are built for exactly that.

Can a CIC contractor do residential improvement work?

No. The CIC license covers commercial structures only. A separate residential contractor classification is required for residential work in Virginia.

Do I need the Business Law exam for a CIC license?

Yes. Virginia requires all contractor license applicants to pass the Business Law exam in addition to the CIC trade exam (Class C exempt). Our Full-Service and Online packages include Business Law prep.

What Virginia Contractors are Saying

I completed the pre-license course and had a great experience. The online format made it convenient to work at my own pace, and the platform was easy to navigate, even for someone who isn’t very tech‑savvy.
